After all of our work, we had the opportunity to watch chicks hatch in our classroom!
What's the best way to get kids excited about learning and make a classroom exciting and new? Hatch chicks, of course! This was part of an extension that my colleague and me pulled together to accompany our animal adaptations and habitat review for our annual standardized test - MCAS. Much better than filling out worksheets for sure!
First, we incorporated data collection to make sure our incubators were properly working and actively rotating the eggs!
We used this data to track which eggs hatched and compared the temperature data to Drumlin Farms data. This science and math overlap turned into the most exciting set of lessons for the year which united the entire school building! Every class had a chance to come visit the chicks once they were hatched and learn about our process and what we learned about the life cycles of chickens!
